Whether working independently for many clients or employed by a single corporation, a thorough foundation in business knowledge of the communication art field has become a must for all illustrators, graphic designers, computer graphics artists and photographers. In the past, this knowledge was gained in the apprenticeship years within a business. Now with fierce competition from seasoned professionals, businesses are not inclined to take a chance on a complete novice at design or an illustrator who hasn't got a clue how to answer the phone, how to discuss a job, or how to conduct themselves in the presence of a client. These are the aspects of the business that are not closely tied to the creative process, but are none the less essential for having a competitive edge in seeking out and keeping clients.
