Thinking Design

COMD 445

This course is about what design is and how you can do it better. Students will explore four basic intellectual methods in designing and executing visual work based on each method. The goal of this exploration will be for each student to develop and articulate a personal theory of the practice of design. In addition to the theoretical side of this class there will be a heavy emphasis on visual execution. Risk and experimentation will be strongly encouraged. The material covered in this course pushes the traditional boundaries of graphic design in the pursuit of a deeper understanding of what is possible. Class time will be split between discussion, lecture, critique and visual experiments. Design assignments will be used to introduce and deconstruct topics related to the practice of design. Presentations by the instructor will include video taped lectures and guests from other departments and disciplines.
