Erik Spooner

Visiting Instructor

Creative director Erik Spooner has been drawn to magazines his whole life. After graduating from Pratt Institute, he contributed to celebrity titles like UsWeekly, InTouch, Life&Style and Closer, as well as music and general interest magazines like Rolling Stone and The New York Observer. Previously has been art or design director for Discover (whose 30th anniversary redesign he oversaw), Elmore magazine, and NYO's Home Observer and Scooter.

Currently a freelance creative director, he is based with digital start-up Nomad. At Nomad, Erik has produced digital content products for big pharmaceutical brands as well as an array of weekly digital editorial magazines. Currently he is working in creative and strategy with the editorial and dev teams to launch a forthcoming project with the James Beard Foundation.

In addition, his resumé includes various non-profit clients like Columbia University's Teachers College, but magazines are his first true love. Erik compares magazines to "hosts of a great private party...the stories they pick up to tell and the reaction of those who read them are never really predictable, but the experience of the exchange is shaped by the very act of putting the two together."

Erik teaches Typography I and Typography II.
